Realistic and practical expectations to saving money

Couponing to save money is fun and easy BUT I want couponers, especially new couponers to keep in mind that not ALL items you purchase can be free or almost free all of the time.  There will be moments when you may need to purchase items and the best you can do is to get your full retail price down as low as possible and wait to stockpile the items you need when they hit their absolute rock prices.

You can easily get a jump start on tucking away some future spending money by earning some free rewards like this Walgreens Balance Rewards Points Booster which ends on 5/12.  The deal ideas I have below are great savings at 47% & 54%!  Remember, the idea is to pay as low a price as possible.

When you first start out with saving money with coupons you might not have an ample stockpile and this kind of deal will help you get by while waiting for that killer deal to come along so you can put up a year’s supply of whatever items you need.  I did many deals just like the two I list below so I could get my stockpile built up and then I started following my local sales cycles and tracking my own deals using spreadsheets.  To read more about it in a post I published previously then click here.

In the first money saving deal idea I include the 12-pack Coke, Dr Pepper or Pepsi sodas since we drink sodas in my home.  I wrote up an alternate deal idea for anyone who might not want to get the soda but would prefer to stock up on paper products to add to their stockpile.  No matter how you do this deal, you’re saving money and although it’s not super extreme couponing, it’s still a really good deal that anyone could do, no matter how busy!  It’s easy to save money!

Special Note for my new couponers

I see so many new couponers get excited about posting their hauls and deal break downs but they are almost apologetic that it’s not super extreme savings.  Example:  “I am super excited about how much I saved on my haul today, but I know it’s not super great, it’s only 66% savings…”  Please stop apologizing for your savings percentages!!  This is not a contest and no one is looking down their noses at your haul and thinking it’s pitiful.  You deserve to pat yourself on the back and shout your excitement and happiness at saving yourself some money with coupons!  If you only saved 25¢ in the entire transaction, then it’s savings and you did a good job!

True Story:  I went shopping today at my local HEB and did NOT use coupons to purchase my chicken stock, paper plates, Diet Dr Pepper 12 pack cans, block cheese and butter.  It’s not the end of the world, and it’s okay because it’s rare occurrence but I really needed these items and I was okay paying full retail value for the entire transaction.  I got paid back in a fist full of free and dollar off catalina coupons but that is besides the point!

The point I want to make is that it’s not always possible to get everything you are ever going to need or use for free or almost free.  The idea is to never pay full retail price whenever possible.  That’s realistic and practical couponing!

Balance Rewards Redemption

The most important thing to remember about couponing at Walgreens is that you cannot use balance rewards points or register rewards to pay for your final balance if you plan to earn balance rewards or register rewards.  You simply cannot roll these transactions without paying out of pocket first.  I don’t mind since I usually like to buy my sodas and cereals at Wags when they have a really good stock-up sale.

I can usually stock up on cereal for $0.75 – $1.25 per box with coupons and a store sale.  My kids get excited because it means they can have their pick of varieties.  About the time we are starting to run low, the store will have another killer cereal deal and I will have accumulated enough balance rewards points to stock up without paying a penny out of pocket!

If you want to use manufacturer coupons AND a store coupon, you have to be sure that your coupons don’t exceed the number of items in your transaction or you will need to grab a filler item to cover that coupon.  Example, you can’t use 15 total coupons on 13 total items even though 3 of your coupons are Walgreens store coupons.  I typically grab the cheap candy or gum that is featured in the ad or a single pencil, lollipop or caramel chew (when available).
